Too many of us get caught up in doing things perfectly or not at all.
Meditation is a great example of this.
We have found that some people do great using something like youtube to help them take a mindfulness break throughout their day. However, if something comes up and they don't have the perfect environment to use a youtube video, they decide to skip their daily practice altogether.
Prioritizing mindfulness breaks can do wonders for your health. Over 90% of my clients say they 'feel better' afterwaredsd. But things happen.
Meetings come up, emergencies happen, life just gets in the way.
How you adapt and deal with these situations will have an impact on your health and fitness progress.
You could just throw in the towel and say, "It's just not going to happen today!" Or, you can take a different approach and do some sort of mindfulness.
The real benefit of meditation is giving you control over your mind. You can choose when to focus and when to let go. You can switch what nervous system is working and how much stress your body can handle.
Therefore, if you aren't at home, sitting in a comfy position with your music going, you can still work on these things.
For example, on your ride home from work, take two minutes during the ride and just listen to all the sounds going on around you. Really pay close attention. Then, take the next two minutes and turn all of your attention inward focusing on your breath. Excellent time to train your breathing and to be more mindful.
How about at dinner time? Instead of having the TV blaring, take the time to enjoy your food. Focus on each bite and the different flavors you get. Try to even pick out one or two distinct flavors. Not only will this slow down your eating and help improve digestion, but it will also be a great exercise for your mind.
Lastly, when you are spending time with your family, put away all the distractions. This means your phone, tablet or whatever else distracts you. Be present! Really listen to them and engage with them. This is why you meditate. To be able to tune out distractions, focus and be present when it is important.
This is what we call meditating in the real world. You don't need the perfect conditions, just the right mindset.
. Hopefully, your meditation practice has made it easier for you to be present in your everyday life.
Today, practice your calm.
