New Year's goals, good eating habits, being nicer to people...
Why is it hard to make change stick? Let's get right in to it.
Reason 1: Maybe... just maybe you didn't really want it.
Ok not you.. of course not. You've surely seen this in other people before right?
Like you want to lose weight, but you also ate those cookies. Do you REALLY want to lose weight?
I know some of you are NEVER late. Why? It's a must for you, you REALLY identify wth it, so you stick to it. That's what it means to really want something. No matter what, you're going to try your best to make it happen. Even if it causes discomfort.
Difficulty making change stick happens when that deep emotional connection isn't there. Now, you don't need that connection to start but to make your idea/habit last forever, having that deep emotional connection is a must. Simply wanting to do it isn't enough. You must feel compelled, highly attracted, maybe even slightly obsessed to make that change last a life time. Because we all want the finer things in life, but how many of us put in the effort daily?? It's tough because the deep
connection isn't there. Find that.
Make Change Stick 1: Focus on that change daily.
Write it down. Everyday. Here's an error I made. Copying from the phrase I wrote down the day before. Write it fresh from your mind daily. Copying it became more of a ritual then a compelling learning experience. Reinforce until it's a habit that requires little to no effort to remember.
Make Change Stick 2: Do it daily!
It's extra hard sometimes. because you feel the pain in your body, not just in your mind. Ever felt that scary feeling walking into a new gym or environment. That nervousness.
Or that feeling when the craving for a food, or item, or person hits your body. That overwhelming rush can suck.
With practice, your mind can douse that fire. But you have to put your body in motion, almost daily, and face that overwhelming rush. Soon you will master that feeling and will be able to execute at a high level.
Make Change Stick 3: Measure
This unlocks self awareness. If you don't measure you will let yourself off the hook. You will get used to the "3" days and stop striving for more. Seeing 5,4,4,2,3,2, sets an alarm off inside of you where you're lie, I gotta get back up to that 5! Use an easy 1-5 scale to get started measuring a variety of things that are important to you; happiness, energy, physical pain, work life, relationship health, ect...
